COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE.
Wake up, make coffee.
Or maybe I was thinking ahead last night before bed and I set the auto timer to pump out that liquid gold, so I could smell it as I zombie crawled into the kitchen to inject it straight into my veins.
Dramatized.
Sort of.
Nothin fancy. No oat milk latte with monk fruit sweetener for $8 a pop at the local hip joint. Or that ‘other one’ with ghee and mushroom powder. Or am I getting my super-cure-all-coffee hacks mixed up? Either way, it doesn’t matter. I’m good with the legit UWS coffee breath that can only come from a dark roast drip. With a touch of dairy milk (I KNOW. I’m the devil). Some days creamier than others. Like, life right?!

That’s my go-to. That’s my jam. That’s my everyday first stop… sometimes before I even pee or splash my face with water: it’s coffee time.
What if I found something I like better than this already AHmazing way to start my day? Maybe not better, because who doesn’t want to start their day off with coffee. Seriously. I question anyone that doesn’t drink coffee; we all are addicted to something and … I digress.
POINT BEING. Meditating first thing in the morning works for me. Being half asleep without my caffeine fix before the day has started in full force (with all it’s many decisions, hurdles, frustrations, and sprinklings of joy), is by far the best time for me to get some good default mode training in, ie: meditation.
Our default mode in our animal brains gets activated when we aren’t doing tasks that require focus. Ie: walking to work, waking up and getting coffee, listening to our favorite album, etc. Default Mode is important. It’s when our brain gets to rest, when we can let the dust settle, stop the chatter … and, maybe, see what is lingering under the surface which helps us to critically evaluate something that we are struggling with.
Personally, I used to hate default mode. I thought it was a waste of my precious mind’s time. I GOT SHIT TO DO, move over critical evaluation or whatever… I got places to be, go, think about. And it isn’t the here and now.
Default Mode allows us to keep being while letting thoughts come and go:
Review and release.
Review, come back to, release.
Hmmmm, interesting thought, review differently, release.
Review and release.
Kinda sounds like a meditation doesn’t it?
And next thing you know, you’re at the front door to your best friend’s place and you don’t know how you even got there.

Let’s help. Let’s give our brains a much needed rest. Consciously, we generally only work to calm the mind chatter for sanity sake and then it’s too late because we are OVERWHELMED. But now we know: there is an enormous benefit of helping our top loading machine power down.
Reset.
What’s your Default Mode?
Does it need a reboot? Maybe just a shake down… or it might be time to research some alternative operating system. Embrace a different Default Mode or, in the least, show it some TLC. See what pops up.
