Yoga means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and here is a window to see the Roadside Yogi view.

These visual guides can help you Yoga through a lens that is not pretentious or intimidating.

Let’s start with the breath.

One of the biggest challenges in my personal yoga practice was understanding all the differing breathing (pranayama) techniques used in different yoga modalities in different classes with different teachers. This the Roadside Yogi attempt is to offer a base for you to explore the practice of pranayama throughout your yoga journey.

Basic Yoga Breathing: This 3 minute video explains the benefits of using the full capacity of your lungs while controlling your exhales. I find this counting technique to be most helpful when starting a meditation. It is also enormously beneficial when you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed (easily done at desk or a public space! Believe me) or if you’re having trouble falling asleep. Though, there is no movement tied to the breathing explanation in this video the idea discussed is the foundation for breathing within a yoga practice; Inhaling deeply with longer, controlled exhales.

quickies

There is always time for a yoga practice….’

I hated when teachers would tell me that… I mean, I’m busy!

Though I have come to see the benefit to finding/scheduling 5 to 10 minutes a days to move my body and intentionally move my breath. Whether your a marathon runner or sit at a desk 15 hours a day, the hope is that some of these videos get you out of your default body mode and moving with some energized prana.

“Let’s break that down…”

It doesn’t matter how many times you do an asana, approach it everyday like you’ve never done. Then you’ll be listening in to your body’s feedback.

I think of these diagrams as my inner dialogue, or mantra, as I move through these familiar postures. Maybe you’ll find them useful, too.
